EXHIBITION "Korean Treasures in Belgium (re)discovered"

Celadons, Folding Screens, and Diplomatic Archives

31.03 > 13.05.2022 / Korean Cultural Center / Free

Curators: Nathalie Vandeperre (Curator of the East-Asian collections, Royal Museums of Art and History), Adrien Carbonnet (Director of the Center for Korean Studies, KU Leuven)

Opening on March 31 at 18:00

In the presence of H.E. Yoon Soongu, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Belgium and the European Union, Mr. Bruno Verbergt, General Director a.i. Royal Museums of Art and History, and Curators of the exhibition

To celebrate the 120th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and Belgium, a project to restore Korean artifacts from the collection of the Royal Museums of Art and History was initiated as early as 2019. The Overseas Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation and the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage successfully carried out this project, and the restored items; six pieces of celadon from the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392), a bronze kundika, a gilt-bronze case for acupuncture needles, were shown at the National Palace Museum of Korea in September 2021. They are now finally being displayed in Belgium for the first time.

This exhibition also features other valuable objects. A selection of documents from the Belgian diplomatic archive from the late 19th and early 20th centuries are also on display. They are of great historical significance since they trace the first contacts between our two countries, which eventually led to the conclusion of the Belgium-Korea Treaty of 1901. The original copies of this treaty in French and in Chinese will be displayed during the present exhibition.

Photo Exhibition <The Resonance of Trees>
Photo Exhibition <The Resonance of Trees> (image credit: /brussels.korean-culture.org)

Photo Exhibition <The Resonance of Trees>

31.1.2022 - 13.5.22

Artists: KIM Jungman, KIM Sinwook, KIM Daesoo, LEE Jeonglok

Curator: SEOK Jaehyun

Opening on 31/01/22 at 6 p.m.

in the presence of the artists; KIM Sinwook, Curator SEOK Jaehyun & Delphine Dumont, Director of the Photo Brussels Festival

The Korean Cultural Center Brussels shows the photo exhibition of “The Resonance of Trees” in collaboration with the Photo Brussels Festival. In this exhibition, 4 photographers; KIM Jungman, KIM Sinwook, KIM Daesoo, LEE Jeonglok, with unique perspectives and experiences on trees tell the deep resonance of trees. Trees resemble humans in many aspects. The impression one gets from projecting onto the tree may vary depending on the recipient. The four artists invited to this exhibition, KIM Jungman, KIM Sinwook, KIM Daesoo, and LEE Jeonglok, each have their own sentiment of trees that they want to picture on the frame. The tree of 'KIM Jungman', a participating artist at the 2022 Brussels photo festival, is a wounded being, and he thinks that the tree looks like his own lonely self. He communes with trees and waits 4 years until trees allow him to take pictures. After getting permission, he starts working on trees until he gets the image he wants. KIM Sinwook photographed trees from Korean to European forests that shine a light in the darkness. LEE Jeonglok discovers energy and vitality in trees, and furthermore, in his photographs, he expresses a place beyond the real world, such as a mythical world.

The exhibition, hosted by the Korean Cultural Center in Belgium, contains the deep reverberation that trees want to communicate and want to convey. Such times as now where it is difficult to realize that we are living in harmony with nature, we hope that you can find comfort even for a moment in the deep resonance of trees.

PARK DAE SUNG <眞景時代: THE ETERNAL>

The Korean Cultural Center in Germany is presenting the solo exhibition from March 26 to May 27:

“眞景時代: THE ETERNAL (TRUE-VIEW ERA: THE ETERNAL)” BY ARTIST PARK DAE SUNG.

The exhibition, which will be shown during Berlin Gallery Weekend 2022 (April 29-May 1), takes us through Park's art world, which continues the existence of Korean painting. It provides an insight into Korean "Ink Landscape Painting" and was designed to create a place where Korean art can be experienced in an impressive way.

The patron and former chairman of the Samsung Group, Lee Kun-hee († 2020), has bought many of the artist's works and also promoted him abroad. Park is also held in high esteem by the younger generation, as illustrated not least by the visit to the exhibition by rapper RM from the K-pop band BTS.

The exhibition, which will be shown in Germany in the run-up to a major US tour this year and next, was organized in cooperation with the Seoul art gallery Gana Art.

The vernissage will take place on Friday, March 25 at 6:00 p.m. in the premises of the Korean Cultural Center. The Ambassador of the Republic of Korea, Dr. CHO Hyun Ock, will open the exhibition.

"Sosan" Park Dae Sung (b. 1945) first attracted the attention of the art world when he won the grand prize of the 2nd Joongang Art Prize for <Sangrim> in 1979. Since then he has had numerous solo and guest exhibitions in Korea and abroad, at which he presented his new work, including an exhibition by invitation at Galerie Farina in Cologne in 1987.

Sosan has been brush-in-hand since the age of five and is now credited with modernizing Korean painting by transitioning from traditional landscape painting to what is known as Uigyeong landscape painting, an art form he developed over the 70 years of his career with a unique style and point of view.

He has also recently experimented with still lifes, applying a unique calligraphy style, and despite his age continues to explore various artistic approaches to landscapes.

The continuous basis of Sosan's lifelong painting is his unshakeable self-discipline and perseverance, which allows him to invest "25 hours a day" in painting. The resulting masterpieces make it what it is today.
