2022 Korea Foundation Fellowship for Graduate Studies in the European Region

Program Outline

The KF Fellowship for Graduate Studies (GS) program is aimed to foster a new generation of Korean studies scholars by providing scholarship support to students who are currently enrolled in an MA or Ph.D. program in Korean studies.

Applicant Eligibility

  • MA or Ph.D. students currently enrolled in a European graduate program (as of the 2022 Fall semester) on a Korea-related topic in the humanities, social sciences, arts, or cultural studies
  • Must be registered students at the university offering the program in which they are enrolled
  • Foreign citizenship (Korean citizens must have permanent residency status in a country outside of Korea)
  • Excluded programs/schools: natural sciences, medicine, engineering, MBA, law schools, graduate schools of translation and interpretation

KF Criteria for Fellowship Eligibility:

  • MA Course: MA, MSt, MPhil, MLitt, etc.
  • Ph.D. Course: PhD, DPhil

Number of Available Fellowships

Approximately 12

Grant Period

1 year (September 1, 2022, to August 31, 2023)

Grant Amount

  • MA students: 9,000 euros per year
  • Ph.D. students:15,000 euros per year

Application Schedule

  • Submission period: March 15–April 14, 2022 (18:00 KST)
    • Please be aware that the deadline for reference submissions is 18:00 KST on April 18, 2022. After that, letters of reference can no longer be submitted.
  • Notification of acceptance: Late July 2022*

Required Documents

2. Supplemental materials (to be uploaded to online application portal):

a. Research proposal (must not exceed 3 pages):

Download and fill out the Korea Foundation’s Research Proposal form,* and upload the completed form to the online application portal.

*Applicants who are applying for a second or third fellowship period should describe the progress made during the previous fellowship period(s) (using the Progress Report form).

b. Transcripts:*

  • MA level: Academic transcript of undergraduate degree
  • Ph.D. level: Academic transcripts of MA and an undergraduate degree

*Applicants who are applying for a second or third fellowship period are only required to submit academic transcripts from the previous fellowship period (MA level) or doctoral courses (Ph.D. level).

c. Curriculum vitae:

Including information about the educational experience (including the title of thesis), professional experience, and scholarships and grants received in the past and a list of research accomplishments and publications

d. Three (3) letters of reference* (one copy of each):

  1. Dissertation supervisor**
  2. A professor qualified to assess the applicant’s research proposal
  3. An individual able to verify the applicant’s Korean language competency

*The link where one can download the reference form and upload the completed form will be sent to referees when applicants press the ‘send’ button. If applicants do not click the ‘send’ button, the KF’s online application portal will automatically send an email to the referees’ email addresses provided by the applicants after they file their online application. This email will request that the referees write letters of reference and upload them via the KF’s online application portal. Applicants should inform their referees of this before beginning the application process, and all letters of reference should be completed by 18:00 KST on April 18.

**Applicants who are applying for a second or third fellowship period are only required to submit one letter of reference by their dissertation supervisor.

How to Apply

Click on the “Apply” button at the bottom of this announcement and complete the online application form.

The “Apply” button is only active during the application period, from March 15 to April 14, 2022 (18:00 KST).

The application form and all other required documentation must be submitted in Korean or English.

Please note: As system errors may occur at the end of the application period due to heavy web traffic, please submit your application as soon as possible. If you cannot submit your application by the due date, even if caused by a system error, the KF cannot guarantee that it will be accepted.

Important Reminders for the Application Process

  • MA students are eligible for funding through the GS program for up to two years. Ph.D. students are eligible for funding for up to three years.
  • Preference will be given to students who have citizenship or permanent residency in the European country where their university is located or elsewhere in Europe.
  • Applicants must reside in the country of the university at which they are registered.
  • Applicants proficient enough in Korean to be able to use Korean primary sources for their study and research are especially encouraged to apply.
  • Fellowship recipients may not hold concurrent fellowships from either the Korea Foundation or any other third-party institution. However, if the GS grant amount is below the officially stated tuition of the applicant’s university, additional scholarships, bursaries, or other support may be partially permissible.
  • Fellowship recipients must enroll in the program during the semester indicated on their application. Admission may not be deferred to the following year.
  • Fellowship recipients may not take a break from their degree program during the grant period, and a partial refund of the grant will be required if they do.
  • After receiving an acceptance notice, Korean nationals should submit evidence of their foreign citizenship or permanent residency by email to the KF program officer in charge of the program.
  • All personal information contained in the application form will only be used for the program’s purposes. By submitting your application, you agree to the collection of your personal information by the KF.

Responsibilities of Fellowship Recipients

1. Submission of report:

Fellowship recipients are required to submit a report within one month of the end of their fellowship period, detailing the progress made during this period. The report must be drafted and submitted using the KF’s report form.

2. Further reporting requirements:

Fellowship recipients, upon obtaining their degree, are required to submit a copy of their MA thesis or Ph.D. dissertation to the Korea Foundation. The KF will monitor research progress annually for three years following the conclusion of the fellowship period. Fellows who do not fulfill their responsibilities will not be eligible for future support from the KF.
